What is a Breast Augmentation with Lift?

Breast lifts have increased by 70% since 2000 ^[1] because everyone wants the perky, youthful chest that we may have taken for granted in our earlier in life. Or, perhaps you never had the breasts you always wanted, and now you’ve finally decided to do something about it. 

Often, patients with adequate breast tissue will request a breast lift and will not need implants to create the desired volume. But after your breasts have lost volume, a breast lift alone will not produce the best outcome. This is why combining a breast augmentation with a breast lift is the best way to address the common concerns many patients want to correct.

We can perform breast augmentation with lift with either saline or silicone implants.

Saline Implants

The saline implants of today are filled with sterile isotonic saline and have a silicone shell. These implants can be adjusted to the volume the patient desires. Patients select these implants because of the decreased risk of complications should the implant rupture. If this happens, the saline is safely absorbed into the body, however, your breast will very quickly lose volume and need attention. ^[2]

The FDA has approved saline implants for augmentation in women aged 18 or older.

Silicone Implants 

These implants, which feel more like natural breast tissue because of the silicone gel, are approved by the FDA for augmentation in women aged 22 or older. Silicone implant design has been rigorously improved for increased safety in case of implant rupture. ^[2] The gel does not leak as quickly, or at all in the case of rupture. However, these implants do require more frequent visits to Dr. Wolin to ensure that the breasts are healthy and the implant is intact.

You will meet with Dr. Wolin to discuss all aspects of your procedure; this includes everything from what you hope to achieve with surgery to what kind of implants you want. You will also have a chance to ask any questions that you may have about the surgery. At the consultation, Dr. Wolin will perform a breast examination. He will assess your skin quality and breast tissue to ensure that you are a good candidate for this surgery. Dr. Wolin will also review the different types of implants available and help you choose the right ones for your body type.

Preparation for Surgery

You will receive a checklist during your consultation to help you prepare for your big day. What to Expect on the Day of Surgery

The day of your surgery has finally arrived! When you enter our beautiful facility, your nerves may be elevated, especially if this is your first surgery. Our number one goal is to put you at ease. We will check you in quickly and get you changed into a surgical gown. After you are comfortable, we will give you a chance to meet with Dr. Wolin one last time before he begins surgery.

Breast Augmentation with Lift is performed using general anesthesia, and the surgery itself usually takes about two hours. During surgery, Dr. Wolin will first address the breast ptosis using the appropriate incision technique to reposition the breast mound. Many of the most popular lift techniques remove the skin from around the areola either circularly or in a vertical pattern down to the breast’s crease, depending on the desired outcome. ^[1] Dr. Wolin will add volume by placing an implant in the breast pocket, and then make the necessary adjustments to the tissue to ensure that your natural breast tissue and the implant are in an ideal position. The incisions will be sutured closed, and the treatment area will be dressed in supportive dressings to protect your results.

When the surgery is done, we will take you to our recovery room, where we will closely monitor you. Our nurses will ensure you are comfortable and stable before you are discharged home. Remember that you cannot drive after surgery, so you should arrange to have a companion drive you home and spend the first night at home with you.

Recovery After Surgery

The recovery period after surgery is different for everyone. Most patients report that they feel much better after a few days. However, taking it easy and not overdoing it during your recovery is essential. We recommend that patients take at least one to two weeks off work and other activities.
