Preparation
Patients do not require extensive preparation for otoplasty. If you smoke, refrain from tobacco and nicotine use during the weeks leading up to and after your surgery date to avoid stalling your recovery. We recommend finding a friend or family member to take you home after your procedure. Though the recovery period is relatively short, prepare a part of your home as a recovery space. Please pick up any medications you may need for the coming weeks to allow for smooth healing.

Adult Otoplasty Procedure
Adult patients undergoing otoplasty require local anesthetic and sedation rather than general anesthesia. The procedure begins with making a discreet incision behind the ear, where it is easily concealed within the natural creases. Through this incision, Dr. Wolin gains access to the underlying cartilage. He then carefully reshapes or removes cartilage to achieve the desired outcome. The goal is to create a natural-looking contour and bring the ears into proportion with the rest of the facial features. After addressing the cartilage and pulling the ear back into a more natural position, he sutures his incisions and bandages your ears to protect their new contour. Otoplasty procedures take 1 to 3 hours, depending on the patient’s needs.
Recovery & Results
Patients experience swelling and numbness the first few days after otoplasty. Dr. Wolin may provide a flexible headband to keep your ears in place while they heal. Avoid heavy lifting and vigorous exercise for at least 4 weeks or until Dr. Wolin clears you. If you wear glasses, avoid using them as much as possible while your ears heal. Most patients make a full recovery after 6 weeks.
