Otoplasty Dr. Andrew Wolin Scottsdale, AZ

Adult otoplasty, or ear pinning, is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed to correct protruding ears. Patients with protruding ears often develop psychological distress, leading to surgical intervention at a young age. However, for many reasons, some do not receive the surgery in childhood. Using incision, scoring, and suturing techniques, the ears are repositioned closer to the head to decrease their projection. The surgical techniques differ when otoplasty is performed on adults as the ear’s cartilage hardens over time, but adults seeking otoplasty can benefit immensely from correctional surgery.

Double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Wolin specializes in both plastic and ear, nose, and throat surgery. As a physician who has been practicing since 1985, Dr. Wolin understands the intricacies of otoplasty and what correcting prominent ears can do for his adult patients. With a focus on natural results, and utilizing the most appropriate surgical techniques, he can provide exceptional outcomes with personalized care.

About Adult Otoplasty

Prominent ear is the most common head and neck deformity, presenting in approximately 5% of the population. The most common cause is a genetic predisposition. (1) If one or both parents have prominent ears, there’s a higher likelihood that their child will inherit the trait. The psychosocial effects of the condition cannot be overstated. Many people suffer from anxiety and embarrassment during childhood and adolescence, and this may continue into adulthood if otoplasty is not performed during early life. Prominent ear has three causes: loose cartilage, out-of-place cartilage, and insufficient ear folds. These features cause the ear to lean forward or sideways away from the head, resulting in an unappealing appearance. (2)

Adult otoplasty is a specialized medical procedure designed to improve the overall appearance of the ears. It addresses various concerns such as prominent ears, protruding ears, or any other ear deformities that may cause distress. By reshaping, repositioning, or pinning back the ears, adult otoplasty aims to create a more balanced and symmetrical facial profile.

Otoplasty Surgical Methods

Adult otoplasty helps those with protruding ears seeking correction to increase their confidence and create the optimal facial contour. As we age, the ear cartilage hardens, making it more difficult to reposition the ears permanently. Performing otoplasty on adult patients requires additional cartilage manipulation, but can still result in optimal outcomes. There are two main methods: cartilage-preserving (or sparing) and cartilage-shaping. (1)

As the names suggest, cartilage-preserving techniques avoid the alteration of ear cartilage. The methods use internal sutures and tissue resection instead of cartilage cutting or removal. Many surgeons prefer cartilage-preserving techniques because they cause less damage to the ear while providing desirable results.

Dr. Wolin determines the right procedure technique to use during your otoplasty during your consultation after closely examining your ears. Ears can be unique and personal to patients, and he understands the nuances. With many years of experience, he is well-prepared to plan a procedure that will address your cosmetic concerns and provide personalized results.

Adult Otoplasty Procedure

Adult patients undergoing otoplasty require local anesthetic and sedation rather than general anesthesia. The procedure begins with making a discreet incision behind the ear, where it is easily concealed within the natural creases. Through this incision, Dr. Wolin gains access to the underlying cartilage. He then carefully reshapes or removes cartilage to achieve the desired outcome. The goal is to create a natural-looking contour and bring the ears into proportion with the rest of the facial features. After addressing the cartilage and pulling the ear back into a more natural position, he sutures his incisions and bandages your ears to protect their new contour. Otoplasty procedures take 1 to 3 hours, depending on the patient’s needs.

Recovery & Results

Patients experience swelling and numbness the first few days after otoplasty. Dr. Wolin may provide a flexible headband to keep your ears in place while they heal. Avoid heavy lifting and vigorous exercise for at least 4 weeks or until Dr. Wolin clears you. If you wear glasses, avoid using them as much as possible while your ears heal. Most patients make a full recovery after 6 weeks.

Your results are visible immediately after the procedure and improve as swelling dissipates. Your ears are pulled back into a natural position closer to the head after Dr. Wolin removes your bandages. The results last a lifetime, allowing you to enjoy your new, more balanced facial

FAQ

Can I get surgery for prominent ears as an adult?

Prominent ears can be a source of self-consciousness for many individuals, and if you are considering correcting this condition as an adult, you are not alone. Adult otoplasty, commonly known as ear pinning or ear correction surgery, can help address this concern.

Will otoplasty leave visible scarring on my ears?

Surgeons make incisions on the back of the ears, hiding them from the naked eye. For some patients, a small incision is necessary on the front of the ear, but it is carefully placed to reduce its visibility.

What are certain risks or challenges with performing otoplasty on an adult patient than a child patient?

As long as you are in good health and do not present any risk of complications during and after surgery, otoplasty in adults comes with few challenges. The cartilage of an adult ear is harder and more rigid than in a child’s, but it can still be manipulated to create your desired results.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for adult otoplasty?

If you are considering adult otoplasty, it is essential to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in this procedure. They will assess your individual case, discuss your goals and expectations, and determine if you are a suitable candidate for surgery.
