Breast Reduction Dr. Andrew Wolin Wolin Plastic Surgery Center

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure designed to reduce the size and weight of the breasts by removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. (1)

Excessively large breasts can cause a variety of issues, including back, neck, and shoulder pain, skin irritation, and difficulty with physical activity. Many women can also experience emotional distress due to the size and weight of their breasts. While these feelings are completely natural, they do not have to be permanent, as there are safe and effective treatments available.

If you are experiencing any of these issues, it may be time to consider breast reduction surgery.

About Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery involves the removal of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a smaller, more proportionate breast size. The procedure is highly customizable and tailored to each patient’s specific concerns and aesthetic goals. Dr. Wolin utilizes advanced techniques to ensure optimal results while prioritizing patient comfort and safety.

During the procedure, incisions are made to remove excess tissue and reshape the breasts. The specific incision pattern will depend on the degree of reduction needed and the patient’s anatomy. Common incision patterns include the periareolar incision (around the areola), the vertical or lollipop incision (around the areola and vertically down the breast), and the anchor incision (around the areola, vertically down the breast, and along the breast crease). Dr. Wolin will discuss the most appropriate incision pattern for you during your personal consultation.

Preparation

Once your treatment plan has been established, Dr. Wolin and his team will provide you with a set of detailed instructions for how to properly prepare for your breast reduction. While these preparatory instructions are subject to vary for each patient, you can expect to be required to:

  • Discontinue medications and supplements as advised, especially those with blood-thinning properties
  • Stop all cannabis, hemp, vaping, and any other inhalation products for at least 3 weeks
  • Stop all vitamin supplements for at least 3 weeks before the procedure
  • Quit nicotine two to three weeks before surgery to enhance healing (if applicable).
  • Fill prescription medications ahead of the procedure date.
  • Arrange transportation
  • Take at least one week away from work and other commitments to ensure adequate recovery.

Following these important steps given to you by Dr. Wolin will greatly enhance both your procedure experience and recovery journey.

Procedure

Dr. Wolin performs breast reduction on an outpatient basis. The procedure takes two to three hours. It is performed under a combination of ultrasound-guided, long-acting local anesthesia as well as and an anesthesiologist-monitored twilight sedation. After the procedure, his patients can walk out of the operating room of their own accord and be driven home by their overnight caretaker. We have found that many patients report less nausea and discomfort compared to general anesthesia when using our advanced sedation techniques.

Recovery

Recovery from breast reduction surgery varies from patient to patient, but most will experience moderate swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the days following the procedure. Dr. Wolin will provide thorough aftercare instructions to promote healing and reduce your discomfort. As previously mentioned, patients can return home the same day, though Dr. Wolin advises that you arrange for at-home assistance during the first few days. Most individuals can resume light daily activities within a week but should avoid strenuous tasks and exercise for at least four to six weeks, or until Dr. Wolin confirms it is safe.

Recovery timelines may vary, and Dr. Wolin will guide your return to activity based on your individual healing process.
