About Fat Transfers
Fat transfer, or fat grafting, is a cosmetic procedure designed to reshape and rejuvenate the body using your natural fat cells which has grown in popularity in recent years because of innovations in techniques. (1) This procedure involves an incision from a donor area on a part of the body with excess fat where it is then suctioned out using liposuction and purified before being reinjected into a different area. Dr. Wolin and his team at Wolin Plastic Surgery Center offer a variety of fat-transfer procedures designed to enhance and rejuvenate different areas of the body. Here are some of the specialized fat transfer services they provide:
Breast Fat Transfer
Breast fat transfers are an ideal procedure for women looking for a moderate increase in breast size or improved breast shape without implants. This procedure involves liposuction to remove fat from donor areas, which is then purified and injected into the chest area to create fuller, larger breasts.
Facial Fat Grafting
Facial fat grafting tackles the issue of losing facial volume by harvesting fat from areas such as the abdomen or thighs and injecting it into facial regions that have lost volume due to aging or other factors. This procedure creates a fuller, more youthful-looking face while reducing the signs of aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines. The use of the patient’s own fat minimizes the risk of allergic reactions and provides natural-looking, long-lasting results.
Fat Transfer for Hand Rejuvenation
As you age, you may notice changes in the volume of your hands. Fat transfers for hand rejuvenation can restore volume for a smoother, plumper appearance. For many people, their hands become thinner, veinier, and wrinkled as they age and this procedure can provide them with more youthful-looking hands.
Fat Transfer to Arms
A fat transfer to the arms addresses the concern of sagging skin or loss of skin elasticity by injecting purified fat into the upper arm area, adding volume and creating a more toned and youthful-looking arm. This procedure effectively addresses the phenomenon known as “bat wings.” This minimally invasive procedure offers a natural solution to arm rejuvenation with minimal recovery time.
Décolletage Rejuvenation (Fat Transfer to Skin)
Fat transfer to the skin replenishes lost volume, smooths wrinkles, and improves skin texture in the décolletage or upper chest area. This area is often relatively ignored by younger people when it comes to sun protection, resulting in unpleasant side effects as one gets older. Often combined with laser treatments or chemical peels, this procedure revitalizes the appearance of the chest, providing a more youthful and radiant look.
Benefits of Fat Transfer
Fat transfer procedures provide a multitude of benefits that go beyond improvements in a person’s body aesthetics. Some of the benefits of this procedure might include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Improved body proportions
- Increased confidence and well-being
- Decreased risk of adverse or allergic reactions
One of the greatest advantages of this procedure is how it utilizes the body’s own fat, which makes the procedure highly biocompatible. Unlike synthetic fillers or implants, fat grafting eliminates the risk of rejection or allergic reaction, offering a safer and more natural alternative for volume restoration. (2) In addition to the physical advantages, many patients report improved confidence and self-esteem following their procedures.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates for fat transfer procedures are individuals who are in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the results. With this in mind, to perform a proper fat transfer procedure, patients must have enough body fat around donor areas such as the abdomen or thighs to successfully complete this procedure. Fat transfer procedures are highly popular among patients looking to balance their proportions or add volume to their faces for natural-looking results.

Preparation
Given the fact that fat transfer procedures often involve surgery, it is vital to make sure the preparation process is done meticulously to ensure the success of your fat transfer procedure. Dr. Wolin and his team will provide you with a list of any necessary instructions you must follow to help the procedure go well. Among these guidelines, we may ask you to stop smoking and avoid medications that thin your blood, as these can interfere with the healing process. Depending on the extent of your surgery, you may be advised to make arrangements for transportation home following the surgery as well as designating someone to assist you during the initial recovery period.
Procedure
Every fat transfer procedure will look different as each patient receives a personalized treatment plan. Generally speaking, however, the process of fat transfer procedures involves fat harvesting, purification, and reinjection. Patients will receive some form of anesthesia to ensure comfort. Dr. Wolin will make an incision and perform liposuction to remove excess fat from the body. After extracting the fat, he will process it in a centrifuge to remove impurities, such as blood or fluids, leaving behind pure, healthy fat cells.
The final step is reinjection, during which Dr. Wolin carefully injects the purified fat into the target area. Whether you’re enhancing your facial features, adding volume to your breasts, or improving the appearance of your hands, Dr. Wolin carefully plans each procedure to ensure smooth, natural-looking results. The length of the procedure varies depending on the type of fat transfer you receive, but it typically lasts several hours.
Recovery
Recovery from fat transfer procedures will depend on the type of procedure you receive. Nonetheless, patients can most likely expect to see mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort in both the donor and recipient sites, but these symptoms typically subside within a few weeks. Dr. Wolin will outline any postoperative instructions you should follow, which might include how to care for your incision sites, when to resume normal activities, and when you should schedule follow-up appointments to monitor progress.
Results
Results can never be guaranteed and patients should have modest expectations about what they can achieve. However, when performed by an experienced professional such as Dr. Wolin, many patients will find themselves experiencing long-term, satisfactory results. Results will become increasingly apparent during the recovery process. While the body may reabsorb some of the transferred fat in the first few months, the remaining fat cells will settle for lasting results.
